What is online tracking and online profiling?
Most websites track visitors' online activity using techniques like cookies and tracking pixels. Online tracking is used to track private browsing as market research or as a way to target advertising. Many websites share tracking information with other sites and networks. By using online tracking, advertising companies can create online profiles as a basis for targeted marketing. It's a method web site traffic analysis and personal information to create a profile of a customer's browsing and buying habits.
What is a phishing website?
A phishing website is a fake web site that mimics sign-in pages of trusted companies to trick a person into disclosing private information to enable access to an online account. Using this data, criminals can commit identity theft, charge credit cards, empty bank accounts, read email, and lock the person out of the account by changing the password.
Can I connect to Freedome VPN while being connected to my work VPN?
If you are working remotely and you are required to be connected to your company VPN to access your company's internal services, it is recommended that you turn off the Freedome VPN.
While it is still possible to switch on Freedome VPN when connected to your work VPN, it may hinder access to your company's internal services.
What is Geo-Blocking?
Geo-Blocking is the system used to limit the access to the Internet based on geographical location. There are several databases that map IP addresses to countries. These databases then form the basis of block-lists, more commonly known as geoblocks. Website administrators who manage video-streaming sites such as Netflix use geoblocks to limit their audiences to a certain geographic location.
How can I send emails when Freedome VPN is turned on?
If you use Freedome VPN, you may notice that you cannot send emails any more, although you still can read the emails normally.
Emails are typically sent via a protocol called SMTP. To prevent malicious users from using the mail servers as spam relays, virtually all the Internet Service Providers do not allow emails to be relayed using their mail servers except when the email is coming from the ISP's own network.
When you are using Freedome VPN, all the network traffic (including the emails you send) are routed through the virtual location you've selected to use. Because of this, the email you're sending is coming from the Internet in to the ISP and they will normally block it. You may see an error message saying "Email relaying denied" or something alike.
To fix this problem, you need to change the email sending settings on your device. Most of the ISPs allow emails from the Internet when you use the encrypted version of the SMTP protocol, e.g. SMTPS. With SMTPS you will be able to authenticate to the ISP's mail server.
The normal SMTP protocol port is 25, while SMTPS port is by default 465. You may simply try to change only the SMTP port number in your email configuration and see if that helps.
If the port change didn't enable your email transmission, please consult your ISP's documentation or support pages for instructions on what settings you need to change on your device. As this is an ISP-specific configuration change, we cannot give detailed instructions that would cover all our users.
Why does my Xfinity app say I'm not at home, when I am?
When you are using Freedome VPN, all network traffic is routed through a virtual location and your identity is hidden. Because of this some Xfinity applications and services may not recognize you as an Xfinity user which might result in an error message on your device such as "You are not at home." This error may apply to any service which automatically recognizes a user based on IP address, geographic location or similar detection.
In order to rectify this, you will need to switch off Freedome VPN from the main screen of the Freedome VPN app on your device. Please note that when Freedome VPN is off, content providers are able to recognize you and track your usage of their services.
Please remember to turn on Freedome VPN when you leave your home network or when accessing public WiFi.
Can I connect to my local networked devices when Freedome VPN is turned on?
Android: Yes. You can set the local Wi-Fi network that you are connected to as a trusted network to allow connections to other devices within the local network. From within the app:
  1. Tap the Menu icon on the top-left corner.
  2. Tap Settings. Under Connection & Status, tap Trusted Wi-Fi networks.
  3. Select your Wi-Fi network, and tap OK.
iOS: Unfortunately, no. Freedome VPN needs to be turned off for you to be able to connect to your local networked devices.
PC and Mac: Yes. You can directly connect to your devices without any special action required from you.
Will Freedome VPN drain my battery on my mobile device?
One of the worries of VPN apps is the additional battery consumption required when encrypting and decrypting the traffic. Encrypting and decrypting require computational power from the device which will result slightly increased power consumption. According to independent studies, Freedome VPN consumes the least amount of power compared to the competition.
Will Freedome VPN decrease network speed of my device?
VPN apps encrypt and tunnel the traffic through VPN service nodes. The encryption and longer route to the destination increase latency and bandwidth of the traffic slightly. According to magazine reviews, Freedome VPN does not introduce any discernible lag while viewing videos online or surfing the Web.
Why does my IP address seem to be in a different country than expected?
With Freedome VPN, you can select the location through which all your network traffic is routed. For example, if you are located in the US, but select Germany as the virtual location in Freedome VPN, all your traffic is routed through our gateway servers in Germany.
There are Geolocation or GeoIP services on the Internet, such as www.whatismyip.com, which try to determine the location of your IP address as you access them. Usually this works fine; in our example case above, the US user would see that his connection is coming from Germany with such a service.
However, these services don't always work as expected, as geolocating IP addresses isn't always reliable. Sometimes the IP addresses in question may be owned by multi-national companies; for example, a Dutch company may own IP addresses which are located in Japan. There are multiple GeoIP database providers who try to map the IP addresses to different countries and cities, but these databases are not comprehensive and may not contain accurate information. The IP addresses in our Japan example may still show up as Dutch IP addresses according to GeoIP services.
All the virtual locations available for Freedome VPN are located in those countries that we show in our user interface, even if a GeoIP service may suggest otherwise.
I cannot select the "I trust this application" checkbox in Freedome VPN. What do I do?
You will see a dialog "Freedome attemps to create a VPN connection" when you:
  1. First start the Freedome VPN app
  2. After your Android device is rebooted
  3. Freedome VPN is restarted

Freedome VPN screenshot

To make Freedome VPN work:
  1. Select "I trust this application."
  2. Tap "OK."
If you cannot select I trust this application, there might be another app on top of the dialog. Some known apps that can cause this are Lux Brightness, Night Mode, and Twilight.
To avoid this problem, close all apps that may be running in the background.
How I can activate my multi-platform subscription?
If you have purchased a multi-platform subscription for Freedome VPN, you can use with any of your devices supported by Freedome VPN. When you purchase the multi-platform subscription, you will receive an email containing a subscription code. You need this code to activate the subscription on your devices.
On Windows and Mac:
  1. Click "Subscription."
  2. In the "Have a code?" field, type in the subscription code and click "Submit" to activate the subscription.
On Android:
  1. Tap "Subscription."
  2. In the "Have a code?" field, type in the subscription code and tap "Submit" to activate the subscription.
On iOS:
  1. Tap "Subscription."
  2. Tap on "Did you already buy a multi-platform subscription?"
In the "Activate your account" field, type in the subscription code and tap "Activate" to activate the subscription.
I'm using Freedome VPN and still some of my apps seem to know where I am, like the weather app, Google Maps etc. How is this possible?
Freedome VPN cannot prevent local apps installed on your device to access the local GPS system on your device. If you would like to prevent this you can change the permissions on your iOS or Android device settings.
What encryption does Freedome VPN use?
Current Freedome VPN encryption parameters (as of 4/2/2015):
Android, Windows PC and OSX
Control channel: TLS, 2048 bit RSA auth, typically AES256+SHA1 HMAC but depends on client capabilities
Data channel: AES-128 + SHA1 HMAC
iOS / IPSEC
AES-256 + SHA1 HMAC
How does Freedome VPN anti-tracking feature work?
The feature does the following:
  1. Removes all cookies set by known advertising networks, preventing the ad networks from tracking individual visitors from site to site.
  2. Prevents all HTTP traffic from and to what is considered*) as a "tracking domain," preventing also existing cookies to be sent back to those domains.
  3. Forces the Do Not Track header on for all browsing.
Does Freedome VPN support tethering (3G/4G connection sharing via Wi-Fi)?
Neither Android or iOS supports tethering for VPN connections. For this reason 3G/4G connection sharing via Wi-Fi is not possible if Freedome VPN is used.
Does Freedome VPN intercept SSL/TLS (HTTPS) traffic?
Freedome VPN does not intercept SSL/TLS traffic. Intercepting and decrypting traffic would be a dangerous capability to have on our server. It can be seen as a breach of privacy. However, HTTPS traffic is routed through the VPN tunnel.
